What if students weren't just expected to adapt to their schools but had the power to transform them? That's exactly what the Student Association for Leadership and Transformation (SALT) is all about.

SALT is a student-led organizing program through the Urban Core Collective that brings together high school students who believe their voices matter. It is a place to build friendships, develop leadership skills, learn the history of youth movements, and take action on the issues that affect students every day. Whether you're passionate about school safety, better food, transportation, mental health, or something entirely different, SALT helps you turn your ideas into action.

Students Are Already Creating Change

Over the past few years, SALT students have proven that young people don't have to wait for permission to make a difference.

Students organized marches, spoke at Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education meetings, met with decision-makers, and advocated for the changes they wanted to see in their schools. They fought for higher teacher and staff pay, pushed for greater transparency in district decision-making, advocated for healthier school meals, and organized against expanding virtual instruction in favor of more qualified teachers in classrooms. Along the way, they helped bring attention to issues affecting thousands of students across Grand Rapids.

As SALT leader Nkechinyere "Nkechi" Okwuwasi shared:

"SALT has taught me that everybody can have power."

That belief has become the foundation of the program.

Leadership That Starts With Relationships

Leadership isn't just about speaking into a microphone or attending meetings. It's about learning, listening, building trust, and discovering what kind of leader you want to become.

That's why SALT Cohort 1 begins with relationships.

During the Fall 2026 semester, students will spend time getting to know one another, exploring how schools and communities work, building leadership and public speaking skills, learning organizing strategies, and developing projects they'll bring to life later in the year.

Then, during Winter and Spring 2027, students will put those skills into action by leading projects that create real change in their schools and communities.

Throughout the program, students receive mentorship, hands-on leadership experience, and a supportive community that believes young people deserve a seat at every table where decisions are being made.

Why Join SALT?

As a SALT member, you'll have the opportunity to:

• Build confidence through public speaking and leadership training.
• Learn how schools, school boards, and communities work.
• Be paired with mentors who will support your growth.
• Learn the history of youth organizing and movements that changed the world.
• Work alongside other students who care about making a difference.
• Design and lead projects focused on issues that matter to you.
• Find a supportive community where your ideas, experiences, and voice are valued.

Students who complete at least 80% of the program will also receive a $500 gift card in recognition of their commitment and participation.
